SACRIFICE

he llama, important for both transport and wool, was also an important sacrifical offering in Inca religion. White llamas were preferred as offerings to the sun god. Human sacrifices sometimes took place as part of funerary rites and were also a part of the festival of capacocha, a state celebration held every four years in honor of the sun. Four children between 10 and 12 years old, who were unblemished and of great beauty, were selected from the four quarters of the empire. After celebrating the festival in Cuzco during which they were revered and feasted, they were put to sleep, lowered into a deep hole in the ground, and walled in alive. Later these "chosen" ones were worshipped and prayed to as guardian spirits.
